Local country artist Billy Shaw Jr. has made a name for himself in Arizona. In 2016, he won Tucson’s Nash Next competition. This year, he is a finalist with hopes to have a second chance to compete in the Nash Next national finals in Nashville, TN. Shaw has opened for national touring artists like Thompson Square and Lauren Alaina. He is also part of Arizona Originals, a songwriter showcase featuring local country artists.
Shaw recently released his first single, “Cowboy at Heart” This catchy tune showcases Shaw’s songwriting mastermind. Expect to hear plenty of fiddle, a sound missing from almost every country song with radio play. Shaw is known as being as “geeky as he is country.” This song is more than a song with a fiddle. The lyrics are powerful, telling a personal story of what it was like growing up in Tucson, Arizona working a 9-5, but still being a cowboy at heart.
“No callus on my hands from working on a farm. Oh but my heart is callused from the days that were hard. I don’t rope, I don’t ride. No I sit behind a desk from 9-5. But I say yes ma’am and help my neighbor. And I ain’t afraid of heavy labor. No I can’t help how I got my start. I’m a cowboy, a cowboy at heart.”
This single is just the beginning for Shaw. He has plans to continue getting his name out there by playing local and national shows. His perseverance and motivation is backing his drive to make it in the country world.
